Gabb vs Bark Phone: what is the difference?

The Gabb Phone 4 removes the app store and browser, while the Bark Phone is a full smartphone that parents restrict and monitor. That difference drives the price, the controls and how long the phone fits a growing child.

Gabb says the Phone 4 is for ages 9 to 14. It ships with 16 preloaded kid-safe apps and an optional curated app library, and has no app store (Gabb, checked 2026-10-26). Bark’s Starter plan blocks the internet, the app store, games and voicemail. Its Advanced plans add app access and monitoring, with cellular data from $49 a month, and can allow Google Play with optional parent approval (Bark).

Gabb vs Bark Phone cost over 24 months

A Gabb Phone 4 costs $999.75 over 24 months on the Standard plan with a 2-year contract, and a Bark Phone costs $946 on the Starter plan bought at Amazon, before tax.

Here is the arithmetic. Gabb adds the $249.99 device, the $30 activation fee and 24 months of service. Bark adds the device and 24 months of service, with no activation fee.

SetupCalculation24-month total
Gabb Standard, 2-year contract249.99 + 30 + (29.99 × 24)$999.75
Gabb Standard, no contract249.99 + 30 + (34.99 × 24)$1,119.75
Gabb Advanced, 2-year contract249.99 + 30 + (34.99 × 24)$1,119.75
Gabb Advanced, no contract249.99 + 30 + (39.99 × 24)$1,239.75
Bark Starter, device paid upfront250 + (29 × 24)$946
Bark Starter, financed(15 × 24) + (29 × 24)$1,056
Bark Advanced Wi-Fi only ($39)250 + (39 × 24)$1,186
Bark Advanced 4GB ($49)250 + (49 × 24)$1,426
Bark Advanced 8GB ($59)250 + (59 × 24)$1,666
Bark Advanced unlimited ($79)250 + (79 × 24)$2,146

Gabb’s Starter plan is closed to new customers, so it is left out. Gabb’s terms describe a 24-month device purchase plan with equal monthly payments but list no Phone 4 amount, so the table prices the device upfront. All totals are before tax.

Two points change the comparison. Bark Starter has no voicemail, while Gabb Standard includes group and picture messaging. Gabb’s lower monthly price depends on signing a contract, and leaving a 2-year term early costs up to $150 plus tax, shrinking each month from month 7. For more plans side by side, see kids phone plans.

Gabb’s family rate lowers the price for extra lines. Lines 2 to 5 pay the lowest rate for their plan, so $29.99 for Standard phones (Gabb).

Which has better parental controls, Bark or Gabb?

Bark gives parents more settings on a full smartphone, and Gabb gives fewer settings because it removes more features.

On Bark, Advanced plans let a parent turn contact approval on or off, while Starter plans always require it. Unapproved contacts are blocked: their texts are hidden from the child, and their calls go to voicemail when voicemail is enabled (Bark, 27 Jul 2026). Parents can allow or block Google Play, and can switch on “Require app approval” so a new app is unusable until they approve it. Bark and system apps cannot be uninstalled by the child.

On Gabb, the Parent App alerts parents to potentially problematic texts or images. Gabb Guard aims to reduce unwanted spam calls and texts (Gabb). Gabb’s own comparison page puts GPS updates at “approximately every 15 minutes”, not a live feed (Gabb, information as of 2026-05-05).

Can parents read every text on Gabb or Bark?

No. Neither phone gives parents a full inbox view. Gabb’s Parent App alerts parents when potentially problematic texts or images are detected (Gabb). Bark says it “doesn’t give parents access to every message” and sends an alert with a copy of the flagged content and suggested next steps (Bark).

The practical difference is contact control. Bark hides every conversation that includes an unapproved contact, so strangers never reach your child’s inbox.

Can the child install apps on a Bark or Gabb phone?

On Gabb, the child cannot install anything from an open store. On Bark, the answer depends on the plan.

Gabb’s Phone 4 has no app store. Its Advanced plan adds optional third-party apps that a parent enables (Gabb). On Bark, Starter plans always block Google Play, and Advanced plans can allow it (Bark). With “Require app approval” on, a new install stays grayed out until the parent approves it. For more no-browser options, see phones without internet for kids.

Do Gabb and Bark work outside the US?

Neither phone works outside the United States as of 2026-10-26.

Gabb’s terms require you to be located in the United States, including its territories, possessions and commonwealths (Gabb). Bark Phones ship only inside the US, exclude US territories and PO boxes, and cannot ship to Alaska. Service covers the continental US and Hawaii, and cell service stops working outside the US (Bark). Bark’s parental control apps are available in the US, Australia and South Africa, but the phone itself stays US only.

Which should you pick? A checklist

Choose by answering these five questions in order.

  1. Should your child have no open app store or browser? Choose Gabb.
  2. Do you expect to allow apps, data or social media within two years? Choose Bark, and start on Starter or Advanced Wi-Fi only.
  3. Do you want to avoid a contract? Bark lets you cancel any time. Gabb’s no-contract price is $5 a month higher.
  4. Do you need group and picture texts from day one? Gabb Standard includes both. On Bark, confirm them for your plan before you buy.
  5. Do you live in the US? Both phones require it. If not, see dumbphones that work with WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for my child, the Bark Phone or the Gabb Phone?

Gabb suits a child aged 9 to 14 who should have no open app store or browser. Bark suits a family that wants to start locked down and add features later from the parent dashboard. Both are US only, so the choice comes down to how long you want the restrictions to stay fixed.

Is the Gabb Phone cheaper than the Bark Phone?

Not always. On the plans closest to each other, Gabb Standard on a 2-year contract costs $999.75 over 24 months and Bark Starter bought at Amazon costs $946, both before tax. Bark's full-smartphone plans cost more, from $1,186 to $2,146.

Can Gabb or Bark parents read every text?

Gabb says its Parent App alerts you only when potentially problematic texts or images are detected. Neither shows parents every message. Bark's text-message FAQ says Bark does not give parents access to every message; it sends an alert with a copy of the flagged content instead.

Do the Bark Phone and Gabb Phone work outside the US?

No. Gabb's terms require you to be in the United States and its territories. Bark's phone ships only inside the US, and its cell service stops working outside the US. Bark's parental control apps are available in the US, Australia and South Africa.
