Dumbphones with WhatsApp: which ones really work in 2026

A dumbphone can run WhatsApp only if it is built on Android. WhatsApp ended support for KaiOS, the system in Nokia flip phones such as the 2720, 2780 and 6300 4G, from 25 June 2024 for new logins (KaiOS notice). If you want WhatsApp, buy a small Android phone; otherwise keep texting.

Which dumbphones run WhatsApp in 2026?

Only dumbphones built on Android run the real WhatsApp app in 2026, and they are a small group. Classic feature phones with Nokia-style keypads cannot run it, and the KaiOS phones that once could have lost support.

The table below is a dated tracker. “Last confirmed” is the date a source for that row was opened, not a hands-on test by us. Dumbphone HQ has not tested these phones.

Can you use WhatsApp on a flip phone with KaiOS?

No. WhatsApp ended its service on KaiOS, the system inside most Nokia flip phones sold since 2019.

KaiOS’s own notice says phones where WhatsApp was never logged in, or where the user had logged out, lost support on 25 June 2024. Phones activated before that date and still logged in were told the app would keep working “until early 2025”. The notice carries no publication date and WhatsApp itself did not publish a long statement, so I treat early 2025 as the end of the road.

Reports based on the notice list the Nokia 800 Tough, 2720 Flip, 2760 Flip, 2780 Flip, 6300 4G, 8000 4G and 8110 4G, plus the JioPhone and JioPhone 2, as affected. Trade coverage also says the app was removed from the KaiOS store and that KaiOS 3.0 never got it.

A Reddit thread from December 2024 reported odd behaviour near the cutoff, such as update pop-ups and messages sent only now and then. That is anecdote. Nothing I found shows WhatsApp working on a KaiOS phone in 2026.

What about the Nokia 6300 4G that shops still say has WhatsApp?

The Nokia 6300 4G runs KaiOS, so a shop listing or AI summary that says it has WhatsApp is out of date.

Google’s AI Overview for this query still suggested the 6300 4G with “built-in support for WhatsApp” when the search results were saved on 2026-10-25. That matches the pre-2024 situation. If a seller advertises WhatsApp on a KaiOS Nokia, ask what happens on a new login, because the notice says new logins stopped on 25 June 2024.

If you already own a KaiOS Nokia, you can keep it for calls and texts. For WhatsApp, move to the Android route below or use a different app that is still supported on your phone.

Which dumbphones with WhatsApp still work: the Android route

The Android-based small phones are the only dumbphone route that runs the official WhatsApp app, and the Dumber Mini is the best-documented example.

The Dumber Mini runs Dumber OS, based on AOSP 14 and LineageOS 21, with MicroG as a compatibility layer and Aurora Store for app downloads (The Gadgeteer, 16 Aug 2026). A review published 15 Oct 2026 says Dumber states WhatsApp “works for most accounts”. It also warns that some accounts hit a Play Integrity check at sign-in, and that the official app will not sign in on a phone Google has not certified.

The same review says a signed-in account keeps working as long as you do not sign out, and that you can test your number first in an Android emulator by requesting the code without entering it. Fallbacks it names are another phone number, a linked-device app called DumberChat, or Beeper for texts only.

Three limits matter:

  • Carrier: in the US it supports only T-Mobile (and Telus in Canada), not AT&T or Verizon.
  • Price: reviewers list $199 (The Gadgeteer) and $219 (Pause Gadget) for preorders, shipping from December 2026. Check the maker’s page before paying.
  • Calls: VoLTE calls work out of the box. Wi-Fi calling does not yet.

Neither review says how WhatsApp groups or photos behave on the 2.8-inch screen. I will not guess.

Does the Mudita Kompakt or any e-ink dumbphone run WhatsApp?

The Mudita Kompakt does not ship with WhatsApp, and Mudita’s support page says so.

The page, last modified 3 Oct 2026, says the Kompakt “does not include a dedicated messaging app like WhatsApp or Signal” and has a built-in SMS and MMS app. A related Mudita page says there is no app store. A forum user reports sideloading WhatsApp, which is unofficial and unsupported, so the risk is yours. It is also the kind of workaround that can break when WhatsApp raises its minimum system version.

Why WhatsApp might stop working on your dumbphone

WhatsApp stops working on a phone when its operating system falls below the minimum version, when the app is withdrawn for that platform, or when Google will not certify the device.

  1. Minimum version rises. WABetaInfo reported on 27 April 2026 that WhatsApp would drop Android versions older than 6.0 on 8 September 2026, for both WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business. That date has now passed. The iPhone minimum stays at iOS 15.1.
  2. Platform sunset. KaiOS is the example. No version update could fix it.
  3. Certification. The Dumber Mini review shows a modern Android phone can still fail sign-in if Google has not certified it.
  4. Maker stops updating. A phone stuck on an old Android build can pass today and fail at the next minimum bump. Ask the maker how long it will ship security and OS updates.

I could not read WhatsApp’s own “About supported operating systems” help page, because it loads its content with scripts. The Android and iPhone minimums above come from WABetaInfo, which cites in-app notices. Open the WhatsApp supported operating systems page yourself before you buy.

Which should you pick? A short checklist

Answer these in order and stop at the first line that fits.

  1. You only need WhatsApp for one landlord, school or family group: an Android minimalist phone such as the Dumber Mini, if your carrier is supported.
  2. You want calls and SMS, and WhatsApp can stay on a tablet or old smartphone at home: any 4G flip phone from the Dumbphone HQ guides.
  3. You are shopping for a KaiOS Nokia because a listing says WhatsApp: skip it.
  4. You want an e-ink phone: expect no official WhatsApp.
  5. A listing says “WhatsApp compatible” with no OS version: ask the seller for the Android version and whether the phone is Google certified.

A WhatsApp-capable phone is partly a smartphone, because it runs Android and installs apps. If your goal is less screen time, that is the trade-off. The Dumbphone HQ home page explains how we weigh it.
