Is the Bark Phone worth it?

The Bark Phone is worth it if you want a smartphone that starts locked and opens up as your child grows. It is the wrong pick if you want a phone with no apps, or full access to every message.

Every price and rule below comes from Bark’s own pricing and help pages, checked on 2026-10-26, plus public Trustpilot reviews.

Bark sells a smartphone with parental controls built in. The wireless plan is billed separately and includes Bark Premium monitoring for the family (Bark). The case for it is that one phone can go from “calls and texts only” to a fuller smartphone without a new device. The case against is price, the US-only cellular service and the complaints covered below. For a side-by-side with Gabb, see Gabb vs Bark Phone.

What is the Bark Phone monthly fee?

The Bark Phone wireless plan costs $29 a month on Starter and $39 to $79 a month on Advanced, before tax, as of 2026-10-26.

PlanPrice a monthWhat it includes
Starter$29Unlimited talk and text, location tracking, Bark Premium. No internet, app store, games or voicemail.
Advanced, Wi-Fi only$39Talk and text, app and contact management, monitoring of text, social, search and voicemail
Advanced, 4GB$49Same, with 4GB of data
Advanced, 8GB$59Same, with 8GB of data
Advanced, unlimited$79Same; speeds drop after 35GB and may be cut after 50GB in a month

Wireless plans do not support hotspots. Change or cancel any time in account settings (Bark pricing). Phones in the $29 to $79 range are a different class from the cheapest kids phone plans, so compare 24-month totals before you pick.

How much does the Bark Phone cost over two years?

A Bark Phone costs $946 over 24 months on Starter with the phone paid upfront, and up to $2,146 on the unlimited Advanced plan, before tax.

The device is $250 at Amazon or $260 at Walmart, or $15 a month for 24 months at 0% interest. The Bark Phone Pro is $600, or $25 a month for 24 months. The arithmetic below uses the $250 phone.

SetupCalculation24-month total
Starter, phone paid upfront250 + (29 × 24)$946
Starter, phone financed(15 × 24) + (29 × 24)$1,056
Advanced Wi-Fi only250 + (39 × 24)$1,186
Advanced 4GB250 + (49 × 24)$1,426
Advanced 8GB250 + (59 × 24)$1,666
Advanced unlimited250 + (79 × 24)$2,146

Can parents see texts on the Bark Phone?

No. Parents do not see every text on the Bark Phone. They see alerts about flagged content, plus logs of who was contacted and when.

Bark’s help centre says: “Bark doesn’t give parents access to every message.” The table below lists what Bark’s own articles say parents can and cannot see.

Bark’s alerts page describes scanning of texts, photos and videos in general without naming which of those the phone scans. If photo monitoring decides it for you, ask Bark support before you buy.

What can parents control on a Bark Phone?

Parents on a Bark Phone control who can contact the child, whether texting is allowed, and which apps are available.

  • Contacts. On Starter plans, contact approval is always on. On Advanced plans a parent can turn it off. Unapproved contacts cannot call or text, and the child does not see their texts (Bark).
  • Texting. A parent can allow or block texting from the child’s profile and set schedules or daily limits for the Messages app (Bark).
  • Deleting texts. The Bark Phone does not let kids delete texts without a parent’s permission.
  • Apps. Starter always blocks the app store. On Advanced plans a parent can allow or block Google Play (Bark).

Teens can see this setup as surveillance, and reviewers say so. A written family agreement fixes most of it. For a phone with no apps at all, read phones without internet for kids. Choosing a first phone by age? See what age kids should get a phone.
