Apps and features
These guides answer whether a basic phone can run a specific app or feature, and on which models. Each one names the software version or carrier requirement behind the answer.
- Flip phone with GPS: which models have maps, and which work offline
Most flip phones with GPS can find where you are, but only a few give directions. Sunbeam's F1 Pro and the Mudita Kompakt store maps on the phone, so directions work without signal (Sunbeam support, Mudita support). Pick one of those for the backcountry. For online maps, the Nokia 2780 Flip reportedly runs Google Maps.
- Dumbphones with WhatsApp: which ones really work in 2026
A dumbphone runs WhatsApp only if it is built on Android. WhatsApp ended support on KaiOS phones such as the Nokia 2720 Flip and 6300 4G from 25 June 2024 for new logins ([KaiOS notice](https://life.kaiostech.com/node/37)); the 2760 and 2780 Flip never had it. Want WhatsApp? Buy a small Android phone.
